TEMPE, Ariz. – For the second consecutive year the Carson-Newman women's tennis program was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic team for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Merry Carson (Huntsville, Tenn.) and Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) were named ITA Scholar-Athletes for their work within the classroom this season.

"This is truly a team effort to be named an ITA All-Academic team." Carson-Newman tennis coach Jean Love said, "There were several individuals who made the commitment to step it up in the classroom so that we could achieve this award."

This is the second time that Carson has been named an ITA scholar athlete. The native of Huntsville was named to the lists last season as well. Carson has played in two career matches for the Eagles over her time in Jefferson City. The business major finished with a 3.90 GPA this past season.

Liashova capped off a stellar freshman campaign at Mossy Creek with an overall singles record of 7-11 and 5-6 within conference play. The native of Ukraine was named the South Atlantic Conference doubles teams honorable mention with partner Klara Vuckovic (Germany). The duo compiled on overall record of 13-3 and 9-2 in SAC play as the Eagles No. 2 doubles team.

Carson-Newman was one of eight SAC schools represented on this year's list. In order to be named to the list a team must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. An individual must maintain a 3.50 GPA in order to be considered for the list.

This past season the women's tennis team made a return to the South Atlantic Conference Tournament, its first appearance since the 2010 season. The team had four players named to the post-season All-SAC team.
