Eagles look to rebuild winning streak facing Mountain Lions

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman prepares for its return to action with a Thursday road trip to South Atlantic Conference foe Mars Hill.

The Eagles (6-7, 3-4 SAC) are fresh off of a 5-4 win over Catawba last Friday. C-N held a 2-1 lead heading into the later portion of the day before the Catawba Indians began to make a slight comeback. The Eagles were able to hold on with wins in two of the last three matches played in the dual.

Only two singles players enter the match holding multiple-match winning streaks as Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Düesseldorf, Germany) and Hannah Price (Knoxville, Tenn.) have both won four-straight.

The Mountain Lions of Mars Hill (2-12, 0-6 SAC) are in the midst of a nine-match losing skid, the past five being Conference losses with their last win coming on October 3 in a 6-1 victory over King (Tenn.).

Second-year head coach Bill Kreger's team sits at the bottom of the SAC standings alongside Catawba as the two teams still searching for success in a conference match.

Jasha Geerdink has been the primary No. 1 singles player for the Mountain Lions this season with a 7-7 record, 1-5 in conference matches. The senior has lost four straight.

On the doubles side, Geerdink and Dani Potts have seen the most time at the top position, garnering a 4-5 record, 1-5 against opposition from the SAC.

Since 2010, the two teams have split meetings at 4-4. The Eagles have won the past three including an 8-1 victory a season ago.

The team was slated to finish at 11th in the conference preseason coaches' poll after a 2016-17 campaign that saw Mars Hill finish 6-12, 1-10 in SAC play.

Thursday's match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at the Hart Tennis Complex on the Mars Hill campus.
