ROCK HILL, S.C. – For the first time since 2010, an Eagle has been named the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Women's Tennis Player of the Week as Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Düesseldorf, Germany) was tabbed as such by the League office on Monday.
The last Carson-Newman women's tennis player to receive the accolade was Taryn Cappadona on April 13, 2010.
This is the first Player of the Week honor for Corsato-Owsianka in her career.
"I also have an amazing team that is always supporting me on the court while I'm playing," she said. "It just makes me play the best tennis, I guess."
The honor comes after a strong week of competition for the senior as she went undefeated in both the No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles spots.
She garnered a pair of straight-set victories on the week that began with a 6-2 win over Lenoir-Rhyne's Iulia Ponomareva on Friday. The win marked the 39th singles victory in her career, propelling her to the top of the career singles wins list this decade. She surpassed Patricia Guerreiro who went 38-28 from 2013-16.
The senior was set on cruise control Sunday with back-to-back 6-0 sets over Coker's Suzanna Mickey.
In doubles play, she stayed teamed up with Abby Reis (Des Moines, IA.) at the top-seeded position for the Eagles. The duo was victorious in a close match on Friday, edging L-R's duo of Emily Murchland and Sanne Janssen.
"Me and Abby were a fresh doubles combination (this season) and we improved ourselves," Corsato-Owsianka mentioned. "We worked on things in practice that we had to improve and work on and it's getting better."
Corsato-Owsianka and the Eagles gear up for their third conference road test of the season, heading to Anderson, S.C. on Tuesday afternoon to face the Trojans. That match is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. first serve.
