C-N hoping to get back on track against Catawba

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – As the Eagles' two-match winning streak came to a close on Tuesday against Anderson, Carson-Newman looks to get back on track with the Catawba Indians coming to town for a Friday matchup at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex.

The Eagles (5-7, 2-4 SAC) and Trojans were neck and neck for a majority of Tuesday, causing the score to be tied 4-4 and placing all the pressure of the day on the No. 6 match to decide the winner. Klara Vuckovic (Germany) fell in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-3, to Hannah Weaver, giving Anderson to slight 5-4.

Since becoming the winningest singles player in the program this decade on March 23, the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Player of the Week Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Düesseldorf, Germany) has yet to see a loss as she heads into Friday with a three-match winning streak. Her conference accolade marks the first for her career and the first for C-N since 2010 when Taryn Cappadona received the nod.

Hannah Price (Knoxville, Tenn.) has also racked up the same amount of consecutive wins.

Catawba (3-9, 0-6 SAC) comes into Friday following a 7-2 loss to Anderson. With a six-match losing streak, the Catawba Indians currently sit in a tie for the bottom of the SAC standings with Mars Hill and Coker.

First-year head coach Chris Juergen's team was predicted to finish the 2017-18 campaign in ninth-place according to the league's preseason coaches' poll.

This year, Catawba is led by junior Erisa Onchi who serves as the top singles player and is a part of its top doubles tandem alongside Olivia Wooldridge. In singles play, she has garnered a 4-7 record while going 3-8 in doubles matches. For matches against SAC opponents, she has record 0-5 and 1-4 clip, respectively.

Onchi has not seen playing time since going down with an ankle injury on Tuesday against Queens.

The strongest position for the Catawba Indians has been at the No. 2 singles position where Sophie Hirsch has taken a 6-5 record, 2-3 in conference matches.

Carson-Newman has won three-straight over the Catawba Indians and looks to extend its 5-3 lead in the series this decade. The last time the two teams met, a quick 3-0 lead through doubles play helped propel C-N to an 8-1 win at Salisbury, N.C. Hirsch was the only Catawba Indian to win a match on the day, defeating Ali Harris in three sets, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the top-seeded match.

Friday's match between the Eagles and Catawba Indians will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex.
