Eagles Compete at High Level at Belmont Abbey Invitational

BELMONT, NC – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team competed at the Belmont Abbey Invitational over the weekend, showing signs of improvement early in the fall season.

On Thursday morning, the Eagles faced off against the University of Mount Olive. C-N competed at a high level in all matches, but the Trojans came out on the winning side in five matches. Leah McBride secured the line victory for the Eagles with a dominant showing in singles play.

Lara Stamereilers (UMO) def. Anita Chornei (C-N), 1-6, 6-4, 10-7

Leah McBride (C-N) def. Simone Szovan (UMO), 6-1, 6-2

Valeria Guerrero (UMO) def. Suryanshi (C-N), 6-4, 6-3

The Eagles returned later that day to take on the hosts, Belmont Abbey. It was a dominant showing for C-N, taking four of five matches. The Eagles swept the Crusades in singles and split in doubles. Natasha Forrest and Summer Reeves dominated singles play, while Julia Speiser earned a three-set victory. Speiser and Suryanshi took a convincing doubles win, while Leah McBride and Anita Chornei fell in a tight one.

Speiser/Suryanshi (C-N) def. Socarras/Galeano (BAC), 6-3

Summer Reeves (C-N) def. Paola Socarras (BAC), 6-4, 6-1

Julia Speiser (C-N) def. Maria Lopez (BAC), 2-6, 6-2, 11-9

The Eagles faced off against the Crusades again on Friday morning, producing similar success. C-N again took four of five matches, this time sweeping doubles play. It was also another impressive showing in singles, with Anita Chornei securing a win and Suryanshi getting her first singles victory of the season.

Anita Chornei (C-N) def. Leilany Sanchez (BAC), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3

Suryanshi (C-N) def. Taylor Reid (BAC), 6-0, 6-1

On Friday afternoon, C-N wrapped up competition against North Greenville and had another competitive showing, taking two of the five matches from the Crusaders. Anita Chornei and Suryanshi secured a doubles win, while Summer Reeves took a singles win convincingly.
