Eagles Come Up Big in Singles, Edge Union, 4-3

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Despite dropping the doubles point, Carson-Newman (1-1) used four singles wins to earn a 4-3 win over Union (1-2) on Thursday afternoon.

"We have a tremendous amount of skill," head coach Jon Parker said. "In doubles, there are things that we need to continue to work on, although I did see improvement. The movement was much better, and girls were flying around the net… Coming back after being down the doubles point and winning in singles proves that we have the skill to take down anybody; we just need to believe in ourselves.

In singles, the Eagles used key performances to secure the victory, including  _Suryanshi's second consecutive singles win and Anita Chornei and Natasha Forrest taking decisive victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Sindija Manovska pulled off a dramatic win in the No. 5 spot, securing her first win and the decisive fourth point for C-N.

No. 1: Anita Chornei (C-N) def. Liliana Drukerova (Union), 6-3/7-6

No. 2: Natasha Forrest (C-N) def. Magdalena Skachova (Union), 6-3/6-2

No. 3: Suryanshi (C-N) def. Anna Nevada Loendahl Henriksen (Union), 6-2/6-1

No. 4: Anastasia Menghini (Union) def. Leah McBride (C-N), 6-2/6-4

No. 5: Sindija Manovska (C-N) def. Beatriz Verdial (Union), 7-5/2-6/7-5

No. 6: Laia Garriga Oms (Union) def. Julia Speiser (C-N), 5-7/6-1/6-2

In doubles, the Eagles had to deal with the absence of Summer Reeves in the No. 1 slot, dropping the match No. 1 spot. The freshmen duo of Leah McBride and Suryanshi bounced back to take a win in No. 2, but the Eagles lost the third match to drop the point.

No. 2: McBride/Suryanshi (C-N) def. Menghini/Henriksen (Union), 7-5

No. 3: Skachova/Garriga Oms (Union) def. Speiser/Chornei (C-N), 6-3 

With improvement in doubles and clutch singles performances, the Eagles will look to build on the positives in their first road trip on Saturday, taking on the University of Charleston.
