Eagles fight the forces of nature at the Shorter Invitational/Rome Relays

ROME, Ga. – The Carson-Newman men's and women's track and field teams travelled to Rome, GA to participate in the Shorter Invitational/Rome Relays in wet and rainy conditions this weekend. 

"We were challenged yesterday by extreme circumstances with rain, wind and injury." Head Track and Field Coach David Needs said, "Many of our athletes responded to the challenge."

In field events, Freshmen Tiana Mills, and TJ Davis earned second-place in the long Jump with leaps of 17' 05.5" and 23' 03.25," respectively. Junior Cassadine Blassingame earned third-place with a 22' 08" mark.

Freshman Jonathan Mason finished in third-place in the men's discus throw, with a mark of 35.24m. Freshman Jazzimine Hodges finished in first in the women's javelin with a throw of 19.00m. Freshman Christianna Smith followed close behind in second with a mark of 20.12m.

Freshman Lonnie Williams earned second-place in the men's javelin throw, and Luther Walker finished in fifth (35.34m). In men's triple jump, Freshman Christian Robinson finished in second-place with a mark of 14.02m. Blassingame followed close behind in third with a leap of 14.16m.

In women's sprinting events, Senior Amanda Bowman finished in forth-place in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase with a time of 13:00.97. In the women's 400 Meter dash, Junior Shauntae Miller ran a time of 59.43, giving her a fifth-place finish.

From the men, the 4x100 Meter Relay team consisting of Jason (Juke) Williams, Cassadine Blassingame, Luther Walker and Anthony Ball finished in second-place with a time of 43.59.

Darius Childs finished in third-place in the men's 100 Meter hurdles (15.37), with Brandon Lindley following close behind in forth-place, finishing with a time of 15.82.

Needs said, "All learned an important lesson on how we either take control of our circumstances and press on, or we let them control us and look for excuses."

The Eagles travel to Spartanburg, SC to compete in the Terrier Relays next weekend.
