Stepp soars for first superlative of senior season

SAC Release

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Carson-Newman All-American jumper Tanner Stepp has been tabbed with the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week as announced by the league this afternoon.

Kristofer Potts-Howard was the last men's athlete of the week for the Eagles as the junior was named to the same award during the outdoor season on March 29 in 2017.

Stepp turned in a top-finish in the high jump for the second straight meet after competing in the ETSU Invitational & Knoxville Youth Athletics HS Indoor Classic over the weekend.

The Invitational held many athletes from Division I schools and Olympic talent over the two-day period.

"Tanner did very well over the weekend, "Coach David Needs said. "Winning the meet is great but to see him go after 2.16 meters which would have given him the best mark in all of D2, and barely miss, is a testament to where he is both physically and mentally. I am excited to see the direction he is heading and the leadership he provides through his examples of hard work and dedication."

The Jefferson City, Tenn. native cleared a height of 2.11 meters on his first attempt, marking a season-best and placing the senior fourth in the nation in the event.

Prior to the ETSU Invitational, Stepp competed in the Bast-Cregger Invitational at the beginning of last month topping a height of 2.08 meters which marked a facility record at Roanoke College.

Tanner holds two school records for the Eagles both in the high jump for indoor and outdoor competition. The outdoor mark sits at 2.13 meters after being set in 2016. Stepp set the height at 2.14 meters for indoor that same year.

C-N is set to head back to Salem, Va. from Jan. 26-27 for the Finn Pincus Invitational at Roanoke College.
