Carson-Newman Closes Out the 2022 Season in Style at the NCAA DII Southeast Regionals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Carson-Newman's men's team earns their best finish since 2003 at the Southeast Regional. Two runners make all-region on the women's team for the first time since 2018.

The men's team finished with a score of 273, an average time of 33:54, and a total time of 2:49:30 to earn an eighth place in the 10K race. The women's team finished with a score of 329, an average time of 24:48, and a total time of 2:04:00 to earn 12th place.

"The course was tight so it made things tough but our team stuck to their strategies and I feel that was rewarded with some great performances to end the season," Head Coach Mike Spooner said. 

Men's 10K

"We had a great day on the men's side. Trent Lovelace really stepped up to seal the deal for us as the men's team had their best finish in over 19 years," Spooner said. 

Brent Borden was the first Eagle across the line on Saturday morning. He finished with a time of 33:10.5 and an average mile of 5:20.3 for 43rd place. Borden finished as the top runner for Carson-Newman in five out of six races.

Colten Lee closes out his freshman year with a 44th-place finish. Lee crossed the line with a time of 33:18.3. He had an average mile of 5:21.6. He was the fifth freshman to finish the race.

Trent Lovelace finished just outside the top 50 with a 51st-place spot in the race. Lovelace held an average mile of 5:35.4 and a final time of 33:42.3. Lovelace improved on his performance from last year at the meet when he finished with a time of 37:03.5.

Raymond Brugmans was the fourth Eagle to finish the race. Brugmans had a time of 34:39.0 and an average mile of 5:34.6. Brugmans finished two seconds faster than his time last year at the event but also finished nine spots higher.

Christian Henry came in at 75th place. He finished with a final time of 34:40.3 and an average mile of 5:34.8. The race marked the first 10K for Henry at the college level.

Hunter Miller crossed the line at 35:58.1 to earn 103rd place. He held an average mile time of 5:47.3. The race marks Miller's third 10K, but also his highest overall finish at the race.

Kirby Logan was the final Eagle to finish for the men. Logan came in at 119th place with a time of 36:55.9. He had an average mile time of 5:56.6.

Joshua Chepkesir from UNC Pembroke took home first place at the event. He finished with a time of 31:05.0 and an average mile time of 5:00.1.

Wingate was the top team of the day. The hosting Bulldogs finished with a score of 26, an average time of 31:28, and a total time of 2:37.24 to take first place. Wingate had six runners in the top 20.

Women's 6K

"Our Women's team had to battle injury and illness but had a lot of PR's and of course had two All-Region finishes with Imke and Katie representing the team and University," Spooner said.

Carson-Newman's women's team finished 12th at the event, scoring 329. The Eagles had an average time of 24:48 and a total time of 2:04.00.

Imke Van Gog earned All-Region honors at the event with an 11th-place finish. She had a final time of 22:31.1 and an average mile of 6:02.4. Van Gog beat her personal record in a 6K race by almost a full minute.

Katie Smock also earned All-Region honors after she finished 19th overall. Smock had a final time of 22:53.4 and an average mile of 6:08.4. She also set a personal best 6K by 23 seconds.

Freshman Maggie Hope was the third Eagle across the line. She finished 80th overall with a time of 25:06.0 and an average mile time of 6:43.9. Hope set a new personal best in a 6K race at the event after running in two other 6K races earlier this year.

Autumn Brazzell finished 115th in the race with a time of 26:38.1. Brazzell had an average mile time of 7:08.6. Brazzell set a new personal best in a 6K race at the event.

Freshman Ashley Tuell was the fifth Eagle to cross the line. Tuell placed 120th with a time of 26:52.0 and an average mile of 7:12.3.

Karli Yarid was the final Eagle to cross the line. She finished with a final time of 27:27.5 and an average mile time of 7:21.8. Yarid earned a personal best 6K at the event.

Wingate was the top team of the day. The Bulldogs finished with a final score of 46, an average time of 22:25, and a total time of 1:52.05.

Freshman Madison Clay from Catawba was the first racer to cross the line. She finished with a final time of 21:35.8 and an average mile of 5:47.5.

"With us returning 5 on the men's side and our entire women's roster I expect more great days ahead as we continue to grow and improve the program while also accomplishing some great moments," Spooner said.
