INDIANAPOLIS - Carson-Newman football will be featured twice during the upcoming 2018 season on NCAA Division II's Showcase schedule, the NCAA announced Friday afternoon.
Carson-Newman's game on Aug. 30 at No. 2 West Florida is part of the NCAA's hybrid model, and has the flexibility to be distributed on TV and online. These games also will be distributed online through NCAA social media accounts — specifically, Division II Facebook (facebook.com/ncaadivisionii) and Twitter (@NCAADII).
The Eagles home opener Sept. 15 against Wingate will be broadcast on ESPN 3. Carson-Newman is attempting to set an attendance record for that Saturday night game. It also marks the second time that the Eagles and Bulldogs will square off in a showcase game, last doing so in 2012.
"It's obviously a thrill for our football team to be a part of the Division II Showcase twice this year," C-N Vice President of Athletics Matt Pope said. "We're excited about this provides for Carson-Newman football, to Carson-Newman athletics and to Carson-Newman University."
Carson-Newman and West Florida are the only two teams to be featured in showcase games twice this year. The Argos will also appear on Oct. 13 when they play host to West Georgia.
The game is slated to be the first Saturday night game at Burke-Tarr Stadium since 2003.
Games included were selected from a pool of conference nominations. Of the 16 football-sponsoring conferences in Division II, 15 will be featured in at least one game. One conference declined to participate due to an existing media rights agreement.
Of the teams competing in the slate of games, 14 appeared in the 2017 Division II playoffs, and 15 begin the 2018 season ranked in the top 25 of the American Football Coaches Association Division II poll.
