Six home games line C-N’s slate for 2019

Six home games line C-N’s slate for 2019

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman will play six times inside the friendly confines of Burke-Tarr Stadium in 2019.  Carson-Newman head football coach Mike Turner released the Eagles' schedule Tuesday.

For the seventh time in eight years, Carson-Newman will open the year on a Thursday night under the lights at Burke-Tarr Stadium.  The Eagles welcome the Gulf South's West Florida Argos to Mossy Creek for the return game in a two-game series. West Florida won last year's season opener in Pensacola 19-9.

After a bye in week two, the Eagles immediately hit the road for South Atlantic Conference play with a road trip to Wingate. The Eagles will play under the lights at Irwin Belk Stadium with a 6 p.m. kick against the Bulldogs.  This marks the third straight night game between the Eagles and Bulldogs.  Carson-Newman and Wingate had squared off at night twice in the first 29 games of the series between the two schools going into 2017.

Carson-Newman leads the all-time ledger with Wingate 25-6, however, Wingate is 3-1 over C-N in games played after dusk.

That game marks the lone road affair in a home-heavy start to the slate for the Eagles.  Last year, Carson-Newman played four of its first five games away from the banks of Mossy Creek.  This year, the Eagles have four of their first five at home.

After returning from Wingate, the Eagles open up a three-game home stand with visits from first-year SAC member Virginia-Wise, a non-conference matchup with UNC Pembroke and a league game with Catawba.

The Eagles will be chasing a fourth straight win over UNC Pembroke while going for their third straight win over Catawba for the first time since winning five straight in the series from 2008-12.

Carson-Newman takes the road for the second time all year on October 19 to battle Lenoir-Rhyne between the bricks at Moretz Stadium.  Carson-Newman leads the all-time series 43-17 against Lenoir-Rhyne, but the Bears have been better side of late. The Eagles are 3-8 against the Bears in the last 11 meetings. That followed a series of 31 straight wins for the Eagles, dating from Nov. 3, 1979 to Nov. 6, 2010. That 31-game win streak is the third longest win streak by one team over an opponent in an uninterrupted series.

C-N finishes out the month of October with its annual homecoming game on the 26th. The Eagles will challenge Newberry at 3 p.m. Carson-Newman has won six of its last seven homecoming games.  The Wolves are riding a three-game winning streak over the Eagles, the longest win streak for Newberry in series history.

November sends Carson-Newman to Mars Hill and Limestone for the Eagles' final road games of 2019 before a senior day contest with Tusculum on Nov. 16 and the resumption of the second oldest rivalry game in Tennessee to conclude the year.
