VIDEO: Elliot MacGregor Interview
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman men's golf prepares for its second outing of the spring season, heading to the Ralph Hargett Invitational at the Stonebridge Golf Club in Monroe, North Carolina, on Monday and Tuesday.
The Eagles are coming off a 9th-place team finish at the Saint Leo Invitational, led by a 2nd-place finish from Elliot MacGregor, who finished the tournament at a team-best 8-under.
"It was good," MacGregor said. "Especially with how early in the spring it was. Hopefully, I can keep the momentum going for the next one. We had a big break, so we had a little time to practice and improve things that maybe stopped me from winning. Hopefully it'll translate into the next event."
C-N had two others finish in the top 50, with Nick Daugherty placing 47th and Aidan Powter in 49th. Freshman Ian Schoonmaker delivered a solid performance, placing 61st in his first spring tournament with the Eagles. The other freshman competing, Owen Larson, placed 87th.
"We have a lot of young guys this year," MacGregor said. "We need to build on the experience we have, which we're doing… Guys like Ian [Schoonmaker] have improved so much since the fall, Aidan [Powter] is constantly there playing well."
The Eagles return to the Ralph Hargett Invitational after finishing 8th in 2024. C-N was 4th after day one but fell four spots to 8th on the second day. MacGregor led the returning Eagles, carding a 67-stroke second round to help him to a 36th place finish. Aidan Powter was the only other current Eagle to compete in the event, finishing in 58th.
"This next course is unique," MacGregor said. "There's a lot of dog legs. We need to look at how we play it and help the younger guys… We will be fine and the younger guys will pull their weight."
The Eagles will tee off on the first round of the Ralph Hargett Invitational at 8 a.m. on Monday at the Stonebridge Golf Club in Monroe, North Carolina.
