Eagles drop two weekend SAC matches; Lose 5-4 to Catawba

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Catawba won No. 1 doubles in a tiebreaker to take a 2-1 advantage to singles play, then split the singles matches to pick up a 5-4 win over Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon. Wingate made it an 0-2 weekend for C-N in SAC play with a 9-0 win over the Eagles on Sunday at the C-N Tennis Complex.

The Catawba match was moved from outdoors to the Knoxville Racquet Club after rain rolled into the Jefferson City area.

The Indians topped Dust Davis and Eric Mueller at No. 1 doubles, 9-8 (4) to get the early edge. C-N won at No. 3 doubles as Austin Mackay and Derek Holdway rolled to an 8-3 win.

Catawba won at No. 1 singles as Dusty Davis dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision.

Freshman Warren McClure picked up a 7-6, 7-6 win at No. 2 singles to keep the Eagles in it, but losses at No. 3 and No. 4 singles clinched the match for Catawba.

Garret Duron continued his hot play for C-N. He won at No. 6 in a tiebreaker.

Carson-Newman travels to Williamsburg, Ky. for a non-conference match on Thursday. C-N faces the University of the Cumberlands at 2 p.m.
