C-N Set for Pre-Spring Break Matches with Lee and King

MATCH NOTES

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman Men's Tennis is back in action for two matches this week on the road against Lee and back at home to take on King (Tenn.).

The Eagles enter the final week of the first term of the spring semester with a 2-0 record coming off a 4-3 home decision against Union (Ky.). However, a test awaits the Eagles and it's not final exams.

C-N travels to Cleveland, Tenn. for a match with the Lee Flames out of the Gulf South Conference who have started the season red hot at 3-0 not including a couple of exhibition wins.

For the Eagles to extinguish the Flames they will need to step it up in doubles as the Flames are a perfect 9-0 in doubles contests this season with wins over Cumberland (Tenn.), Shorter, and Tusculum.

Among the undefeated singles for Lee are Wihan van der Merwe, Quinn Groenendjik, and Jip Langerhuizen.

The Flames are coming off a 2024 spring season in which they went 11-4 and 6-3 in conference play, a season in which they defeated Carson-Newman in Jefferson City 4-1.

On the other side, the Eagles return to the Charles A. "Buddy" Catlett Tennis Complex on Saturday, Feb. 28 for a home match against King (Tenn.). The start to the season has not been kind to the Tornado who have started 0-3, pending a match on Friday against Mars Hill before facing off with the Eagles.

The Tornado have already played two South Atlantic Conference opponents falling 6-1 to Lincoln Memorial and Tusculum, adding Carson-Newman to the schedule for the final infinity stone of Tennessee-based SAC schools.

King played its most competitive match of the season thus far with Davis & Elkins in a 4-3 losing decision.

The point against Tusculum came from the No. 5 singles where Caetano Luzzi won 6-0, 7-5 against his counterpart from the Pioneers. Rhys Halcrow won the lone Tornado point against LMU.

Carson-Newman and Lee are set to face off at 1 p.m. on Tuesday while the home match against King is slated for Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m.

Admission to tennis matches at the Catlett Tennis Complex is free.
