JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Two teams looking to end losing streaks square off, as Carson-Newman (8-4, 2-2 SAC) welcomes Newberry (4-9, 2-3 SAC) to Holt Fieldhouse tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
Carson-Newman is back at home for the first time in 17 days after losing a pair of road games over the Holiday break. The Lady Eagles will certainly be glad to play in Holt Fieldhouse again tomorrow, given all the success this team has had on their home floor. C-N is 6-0 at home this season and has won four of those six games by double-digits, including a pair of 20+ point victories and a 40-point win.
The success at home can be attributed to stellar shooting marks. C-N is shooting over 45% from the field in Mossy Creek compared to just a 39% clip on the road. The higher shooting mark at home has translated to a near 80 point per game mark on average as well.
Lindsey Taylor (Maryville, Tenn.) has continued to be extremely efficient scoring the basketball in the paint again this season for C-N. Coming off a 32-point performance against Lincoln Memorial, Taylor missed just two shots, going 14-16 from the field. That helped raise her field goal percentage to 60% on the season, a mark that is best in the SAC and 13th best nationally. The senior is third in the conference and 25th nationally with five double-doubles this seasons. Scoring her 1,000 career point earlier this season, Taylor is just 60 points away from scoring 1,000 points in her Carson-Newman career.
With 8 wins so far this season, head coach Mike Mincey brings his career total to 248, two shy of tying Eddie Carter for most wins in program history.
Carson-Newman will hope to continue its winning ways over the Wolves on Saturday. The Lady Eagles have won 13 straight matchups against Newberry, with nine of them coming by double-digits. Leading the all-time series 36-17, C-N is 21-4 at home against the Wolves and has won nine straight at Holt as well.
Newberry is aiming to get back on track Saturday as well, as it enters the matchup on a three-game losing streak. Two of the three losses during this stretch have come in non-conference games for the Wolves. They are 2-3 in league play with both wins coming at home versus Tusculum and Limestone.
Newberry got its first road win since February 23, 2022, when it defeated Erskine earlier this season. The win ended a 14-game road skid for the Wolves. Despite ending that streak, a new one has began with the Wolves having lost their last four on the road.
April Rummery-Lamb is the team's top scorer averaging 15 points per game and six rebounds. She shoots 54% from the field and is good from the free throw line where she shoots 81%. While no other player averages double-digits, three average at least eight points and three others average right around five points per game.
The Wolves rank dead last in the conference in points per game, just barely grazing 61 a night. The struggle offensively can be attributed to the lack of three-point shooting. Joanna Tincher's team shoots a league worst 28% from behind the three-point line. Both of those marks mentioned have dipped in the five league games this season as well.
Tipoff between the Lady Eagles and the Wolves is set for 2:00 p.m. Broadcast coverage airs on Mountain Talk 106.3 FM and cneagles.com/live starting at 1:45 p.m. with "The AEC Countdown to Tip-Off" courtesy of the Eagle Sports Network.
