Lady Eagles fall at Anderson, 1-0

ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson's Jessica Kleinberg scored the lone goal of the contest in the 81st minute, as the Trojans shut out visiting Carson-Newman, 1-0, in women's soccer conference action Saturday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.

Anderson (4-5, 1-2 SAC) wrapped up its three-match homestand by notching its first conference victory of the 2011 campaign, courtesy of Kleinberg's third game-winner of the season and eighth of her career.

The Trojans snapped a three-match skid with the win – the seventh one-goal decision of the season – while Carson-Newman dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action.

Anderson avenged last season's setback to the Lady Eagles behind a stout defense and an opportunistic offense.

The Trojans got off two shots and three corner kicks in the first 19 minutes of action, while limiting the visitors to one shot and a solo corner in the opening 22 minutes.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net until freshman Summer Miller, who was on the right side, found Kleinberg and the junior from Hamilton, Ohio, fired her attempt from the right side of the box past the Carson-Newman keeper with 9:13 remaining in the contest.

Each team recorded 11 shots on the afternoon and were also even in shots on goal, with eight apiece. The Lady Eagles held a narrow, 4-3, edge in corner kicks.

AU goalkeeper Kaitlyn Neipp went the distance to earn the win, while collecting eight saves. Carson-Newman net minder Sarah   Thomkins suffered the loss, while garnering seven saves on the afternoon.

Carson-Newman returns to action against Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday at 5 p.m. After playing six matches in 15 days, the Trojans will enjoy a six-day lay-off before looking to build momentum off the win at Catawba on Saturday, Oct. 1. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. versus the Indians.
