Catawba knocks off Lady Eagles, 2-0

SALISBURY, NC -- Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) converted a penalty kick in the 49th minute to help lift Catawba 2-0 over Carson-Newman Saturday night at Frock Field for its initial South Atlantic Conference victory of the 2011 season. The Lady Indians better their record to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in the SAC, the Eagles drop to 3-6-1 and 1-3-1.

After a scoreless first half, Catawba jumped on a scoring opportunity when Retundie received a long pass down the center of the field, took it into the Carson-Newman box and was dragged down for the easy call. She beat Eagle goalkeeper Sarah Tompkins going left into the net and giving the Lady Indians a 1-0 lead.

Erinn Wescoat (Egg Harbor, NJ/Absegami HS) would add an insurance goal five minutes before the final whistle on a cross from Athena Bless (Ashboro, NC/SW Randolph HS). Lindsay Webster made six saves for Catawba, which outshot Carson-Newman 21-8.

Forward Trenna Howell led the Eagles with four shots, while Tompkins had six saves.

The Lady Indians will travel to Newberry on Wednesday, Oct. 12 for a 2:00 pm start.
