Howell nets 50th career goal in 5-2 loss at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Seniors came up big on Senior Day for the Newberry women's soccer team in a 5-2 victory over visiting Carson-Newman, catapulting the Wolves into third place in the South Atlantic Conference standings.

Newberry (11-6-0, 5-4-0 South Atlantic Conference) netted their first goal of the match in the 5th minute as junior Cassie Smith (Spartanburg, S.C.) was on the finishing end of  a corner from senior Megan Douglas (Bradford, West Yorkshire, England).

Douglas and another senior combined in the 6th minute as Lora Moore (Raleigh, N.C.) was on the end of another Douglas set piece.

In the 12th minute freshman Mary Stanton (Greenville, S.C.) added her 11th goal of the season as fellow freshman Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.) redirected a corner from Douglas to Stanton's feet. Douglas' three assists is a career high.

Another senior added her name to the stat sheet as Jesse Langdon (Raleigh, N.C.) fed junior Tiffany Kinner (North Myrtle Beach, S.C.) in the 32nd minute. Kinner finished on a blast from just inside the 18-yard box.

Carson-Newman added a penalty kick goal in the 44th minute from Trenna Howell and Sam Thomist goal in the 53rd minute.

The goal for Howell is the 50th of her career. She is third all-time at Carson-Newman in career scoring and in 12th in SAC history.

In the 90th minute, freshman Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) added her third goal of the season when she beat Carson-Newman goalkeeper Sarah Tompkins one-on-one.

The Wolves outshot the Eagles 29-8.

Before the match Newberry honored eight seniors. Those honored were: Brianna Borowski (Nanticoke, Pa.), Megan Douglas, Meagan Heney (Ajax, Ontario, Canada), Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.), Jesse Langdon, Lora Moore and Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.).

Newberry will continue its 2011 season in the opening round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament on Wednesday.
