Tompkins, Lady Eagles shut down Pfeiffer, 3-0

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman keeper Sarah Tomkins (Franklin, Wis.) had 14 saves to notch her second shutout of the season as the Lady Eagles shut down visiting Pfeiffer, 3-0, on Tuesday afternoon at McCown Field.

Tomkins faced 18 shots and had a number of diving saves, including one against a penalty kick, to help the Lady Eagles end a five-match winless streak. She had the benefit of playing most of the match with a lead.

Carson-Newman took a 1-0 in the 4th minute when Bianca Hall (Newcastle, England) scored on a corner kick for her second goal of the season. Hall's low, driving ball slipped between Falcons' keeper Jamie Alcala and the post to give C-N the lead.

C-N would have a few opportunities on early runs, but couldn't connect.

Pfeiffer outshot the Lady Eagles in the opening half, 8-3, but only one of the opportunities came inside the box.

C-N would add on two second half goals. Maleya Garrison (Hendersonville, Tenn.) scored her fifth goal of the season in the 50th minute, slipping a Katie Hunter (Ontario, Canada) feed past a diving Alcala to extend the C-N lead to 2-0.

Senior Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) would add a goal in the 67th minute to push the lead to 3-0. The senior notched her 10th score of the season putting a Brooke Ehman (Chelsea, Mich.) cross home to put the match out of reach.

Tompkins saved 14 shots, including six from Pfeiffer's Alyssa Wombell. Tompkins made a diving save to her left on a penalty kick from Wombell in the 71st to preserve the shutout.

Carson-Newman returns to action on Saturday against Mars Hill College. The match begins at 7:00 p.m. at Meares Stadium in Mars Hill, N.C.
