Tusculum too much for C-N on senior night, 3-0

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman College women's soccer team watched its senior night end in a disappointing fashion as the Lady Eagles fell 3-0 to South Atlantic Conference rival Tusculum College at the new McCown Field Wednesday night.

The win for Tusculum keeps them in the middle of the SAC pack with a 4-3 conference record and 9-6-1 mark overall. The Lady Eagles are 5-8-1 on the season and 2-4-1 in the conference.

The Pioneers had Carson-Newman playing on its heels from the opening whistle. Tusculum continually threatened the Lady Eagles, firing off 11 shots at C-N sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Tompkins (Franklin, Wis.) before Carson-Newman managed their first, a boot from senior Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) that pushed wide right. In all, Tusculum outshot the Lady Eagles 30-9 in the game and 17-2 in the opening half.

The Pioneers notched their first goal in the 24th minute. Tompkins dove in front of a shot from Tusculum's Amy Neltner, getting the save, but not securing the ball. Neltner took the deflection and popped it into the net to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

Tusculum went ahead by two goals with Kim Brown firing an assist from Tramicka James into the net in the 57th minute.

Barely 10 minutes later James nabbed a goal of her own on a breakaway opportunity. James put the ball in the left upper corner of the goal. Tusculum led 3-0 with 24 minutes to go, holding C-N out of the net the rest of the way.

Howell led the Lady Eagles with three shots. Sophomore Haley Julian (Knoxville, Tenn.) had two shots and sophomore Raquel Pimentel (New port Richey, Fla.), freshman Emily Lambert (Morristown, Tenn.) and freshman Jenna Bryan (Salisbury, N.C.) each had a shot apiece.

Tomkins was valiant in goal, recording 16 saves in the loss. Her counterpart for Tusculum, Marissa Williams, recorded six saves.

James led all players with nine shots. Jana Lake had seven shots for the Pioneers and Neltner and Kim Brown each had three.

The Lady Eagles finish up the regular season at Newberry Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m.
