Four Eagles picked for NSCAA All-Southeast Region teams

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Soccer Coaches Association of American has released its 2016 All-Southeast Region teams and four Eagles have earned recognition. Lauren Wade (Coleraine, Northern Ireland) and Julianne Herrity (Donegal, Ireland) were selected to the first-team, Heida Ragney (Akureyri, Iceland) was chosen for a spot on the second-team and Varin Ness (Sogndal, Norway) made the third-team.

For Herrity, this marks her second straight year appearing on the first-team. Ragney makes the jump from the third-team least year to the second-team this season and Ness also garners an All-Region spot for second straight year, as she was a second-team selection in 2015. C-N's total of four players picked for All-Region spots is the most for the program since 2009, when they also totaled four honorees.

Wade concluded her first year in Mossy Creek at the top of the national leaderboard in points per game with an average of an even three. She also finished the year averaging 1.18 goals per game and 0.65 assists, both of which placed her third in Division II. The junior midfielder piled up 20 goals, the country's seventh highest total, and 51 points, which ranked sixth. Her 11 assists put her 11th in the nation. All these totals also led the South Atlantic Conference. Wade's 51 points are the third-most in a season in program history and her 20 goals tie her for fifth. Her year also included a five-goal performance against USC-Aiken on Sept. 12th, which stands as the second-most goals in a game in Division II this season. She added two assists in that match, giving her 12 points, the second-highest total in a game in 2016. The Northern Ireland native scored multiple times in four matches this season, including hat tricks against Tusculum and Coker.

Herrity had a second straight excellent season at Mossy Creek, putting up 18 goals and 43 points, both the SAC's second most, and seven assists. Her 18 scores were the tenth most in Division II and her points total put her in the 12th spot. The senior found the back of the net more than once in a game six times, including a hat trick against Francis Marion on Sept. 10th. She also tallied one of the two C-N goals against Wingate on Sept. 6th in the SAC title game, which the Eagles won 2-1 to capture their second consecutive conference championship. The native of Ireland finished her career with 79 points, tied for the fourth-most in Carson-Newman history, while her 34 goals rank her fifth.

Ragney, who occupied the position of defensive midfielder, contributed to a C-N defense that allowed the second-fewest goals and the fewest shots on goal in the SAC. Offensively, she netted three goals in the season's final five games, including scores in both of the Eagles' NCAA Tournament matches. The sophomore also totaled a trio of assists in 2016.

Ness was credited with 11 assists during the most recent campaign, tying her with Wade for first in the SAC and 11th in the country. She completed the year with 15 points, the fourth most on the team. Her three assists against Lees-McRae on Sept. 3rd tied her for the second-most in a game in C-N history and one of her two goals came against Lincoln Memorial on Oct. 25th and proved to be the game-winner.

The only other player from the SAC to earn a spot on the All-Southeast region first-team was Wingate's Kaitlyn Brunworth. Lenoir-Rhyne matched Carson-Newman's total as four of their players were recognized, including three second-team selections. Two student-athletes from Wingate made the cut and Anderson (S.C.) and Tusculum each had one player honored.
