Fast Start Helps Eagles Top Mars Hill For Fourth Straight Win

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn – Julianne Herrity (Donegal, Ireland) and Hannah Henry (Signal Mountain, Tennessee) each netted a pair of goals and the Carson-Newman women's soccer team powered past the Mars Hill Lions by a score of 8-0 on Wednesday evening at McCown Field.

Carson-Newman improves to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the SAC while the Lions fall to 0-2 in conference and their overall record now stands at 0-5-1.

"We used a lot of different players tonight and it's exciting to see so many of them getting on the scoresheet." Soccer Coach Richard Moodie said. "That's something we've seen all year. We've had the ability to rotate and rest players. We're making the most of our chances and our players have made the most of their opportunities."

The Eagles quickly seized the initiative, as Holly Talbut-Smith (Crawley, England) put her team up 1-0 in the 10th minute. The sophomore took a pass from Elissa Lane (Knoxville, Tenn.) on the right side of the 18-yard box and fired a shot across the net that beat the keeper and slid inside the far post for her sixth goal of the year. Talbut-Smith's goal was the fifth score for the Eagles this season within the first ten minutes of a game. Lane picked up an assist for her first point of 2016.

In the 17th minute, C-N increased its lead to 2-0. Varin Ness (Sogndal, Norway) sent in a cross that the Lions attempted to clear, but instead, a deflection put the ball on the head of Chelsea Jordan (Knoxville, Tenn.), who capitalized for her second goal of the season.

Seven minutes later, the Eagles took advantage of a free kick from 30 yards out to go up by three. Jordan put the ball into the box and it found the foot of Herrity, who booted it over the line for her 10th goal. She got on the scoresheet again in the 43rd minute on a penalty kick after Jaidyn Zapf (St. Bonifacius, Minn.) was fouled inside the 18. Herrity went right with her shot and even though keeper Kaitlyn Danglemaier guessed correctly, she couldn't prevent the score. Herrity's 11th goal of 2016 ties her with teammate Lauren Wade (Coleraine, Northern Ireland) for the most in the South Atlantic Conference. This was also her fourth multi-goal game of the season.

Henry opened the second half scoring in the 58th minute when she made a run down the center of the field and into the box and unleashed a wicked strike that just got under the crossbar for her second goal this season. Allie-Anne Blackburn (Franklin, Tenn.) added her second score of 2016 in the 73rd minute when she received a pass from Sydney Spadafora (Collierville, Tenn.) and hit a right-footed ball that found twine.

Henry added her second goal in the 83rd minute, taking a pass from Lindsey Williams (Wilmington, N.C.) in the middle of the pitch, 20 yards out and sending a rocket past the goalie. Magda Mosengo (London, England) closed out the scoring with her first career tally as a loose ball inside the 18 came to her and she one-timed it for her squad's final goal of the day.

The Eagles defense kept the Mars Hill attack under wraps all evening, holding the Lions without a shot for the duration of the contest. This marked the first time since 2011 Carson-Newman has accomplished this feat. The shutout is the fourth of the year for the Eagles and goalkeeper Jacqueline Burns (Cookstown, Northern Ireland).

Carson-Newman will look to stay perfect in conference play on Saturday, when they hit the road to play Queens (N.C.). The opening whistle is scheduled to sound at 1pm.
