Parsons, Burnett shine on final night of NCAA Swimming Championships

INDIANAPOLIS – Two Carson-Newman swimmers competed Saturday night during the final session of the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships at IU Natatorium on the campus of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.

Senior Stephen Parsons (Auburn, Ala.) and sophomore Natalie Burnett (Sevierville, Tenn.) both swam in the consolation heats in the sprint 100 Free.

The Eagles completed their second season of competition Saturday evening that featured seven All-American swims and 16 Honorable Mention All-American awards.

"Stephen's come from behind swim was incredible. What a note to go out on So much to celebrate," coach Paige McCord said.

Parsons's last swim as a Carson-Newman Eagle ended the way he has finished most races this season, in first-place and with a new school record. Parsons reset his record for the third time Saturday, he reset it during the prelims and swam-off, and won the consolation race with a time of 44.23 seconds.

Burnett finished her successful week with a 10th-place showing in the 100 Free. She obliterated the school record by over a full second after going 50.92 for the Honorable Mention All-American honor, the third All-American honor of her week.

Sophomore Samantha Starnes (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished 55th in the 100 Free. She swam the sprint race in 53.46 seconds.

Senior Ben Young (Morristown, Tenn.) finished his Carson-Newman career with a 26th-place showing in the 100 Free. Young swam the race in 45.03 seconds. Sophomore Samuel Schechter (Knoxville, Tenn.) and freshman Paul Ungur (Baie Mare, Romania) also swam the 100 Free. Schechter finished 48th with a time of 45.84 and Ungur followed up in 52nd with a 46.11 second time.

Freshman Maggie Melhorn (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished just outside the consolation round in the 200 Breast. Melhorn finished 19th in the nation in the race after swimming a 2:20.60 in the preliminaries.

The 400 Free Relay time comprised of Starnes, Melhorn, freshman Lexy Raybon (Sarasota, Fla.) and freshman Margaret Stansberry (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished 17th in the event after swimming the race in 3:33.11.

The women's team finished the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in 19th-place in its first-ever appearance in the event. The men's team placed 20th. Bluegrass Mountain Conference foe Queens (N.C.) Royals won the national championships in both the men's and women's competition.
