Ungur, Stansberry lead Eagles on second day at Fall Frenzy

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Carson-Newman freshman swimmer Paul Ungur clinched his team's first-ever NCAA "A" cut and set a new school record with a win in the 100 Backstroke.

Ungur's time of 47.83 in the 100 Back also gave the Eagles their first win in two years at the Fall Frenzy at Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Fellow freshman Margaret Stansberry (Knoxville, Tenn.) picked up two top-five finishes for the women's team.

In total, the Eagles set seven more school records, set the first "A" time in program history and set seven more NCAA provisional times. After the second day, the men are in fifth and the women sit in eighth-place on the scoreboard.

"I'm really proud of Paul and the way we swam today. Seven more school records is incredible and Paul getting our first ever "A" time is great for him and our program," coach Paige McCord said. "I look forward to us continuing this progress tomorrow."

For the second consecutive day, the relay teams picked up big points for the Eagles as all four relays placed in the top-eight.

For the men, Ungur combined with sophomore Kent Eldrith (Knoxville, Tenn,), sophomore Sam Schechter (Knoxville, Tenn.) and senior Ben Young (Morristown, Tenn.) placed third in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:29.81. That time set a new school record and was also a NCAA provisional time.

The 800 Free Relay of sophomore Tommy Bourgeois (Kingsport, Tenn.), freshman Ben McCrary (Woodbury, Tenn.), senior Stephen Parsons (Auburn, Ala.) and Young finished in eighth-place with a time of 6:56.07.

Individually, Ungur led the way with his win in the 100 Back. He also set a school record with a time of 48.78 in the 100 Fly, which was another NCAA provisional time.

After qualifying second in the 200 Free, Parsons finished the finals in third a season best time of 1:39.71. His time was quick enough to be a NCAA provisional time and was just five-hundredths of a second off the school record.

Eldreth set a new school record in the 100 Breast with a time of 55.68. He placed sixth in the event but also earned a NCAA provisional time.

The women's 200 Medley Relay consisting of Stansberry, freshman Maggie Melhorn (Knoxville, Tenn.), sophomore Natalie Burnett (Sevierville, Tenn.) and sophomore Samantha Starnes (Knoxville, Tenn.) set a new school record with a time of 1:47.10 and placed seventh at the meet.

Sophomore Taylor Bing (Memphis, Tenn.), Melhorn, Burnett and Starnes made up 800 Free Relay team that placed eighth and set a school record with a time of 7:48.38.

Sophomore Nancy Claire Smith (Franklin, Tenn.) finished the 400 Individual Medley with a new school record and a time of 4:33.63. She finished the finals in sixth-place. In the 100 Breast, Smith swam a time of 1:07.69 and placed 18th.

Stansberry finished the 200 Free with another school record time of 1:53.32 and a NCAA provisional time.  The freshman placed third in the 100 Back with a season best time of 57.70.

The third and final day of the Fall Frenzy is Sunday. The 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly and 400 Free Relay are scheduled to take place.
