Eagles with standout individual swims for second-straight day at Emory Invite

Day Two Results

ATLANTA – Day two of the Emory Fall Invitational wrapped up on Saturday afternoon with the final standings ending the same way following day one. Both the Carson-Newman men's and women's swim teams collected third-place finishes with swimmers Caleb Howell, Meredith Ginn, and Lisa Postma all collecting individual event wins.

Emory took the victory in both sides collecting a total of 647 points in the women and 626 in the men.

Wingate followed up in second with scores of 575 and 470 respectively, while C-N's groups gathered a total of 407.5 and 470 after the pair of days. Catawba rounded out the four with 228.5 points on the women's side and 266 on the men's.

Each team kicked off the morning's events with the 200-yard medley relay which saw the C-N women's side of Meredith Ginn, Gabby Aguiar, Elly Culp, and Lisa Postma collect 20 points and a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:49.54. The 'B' team of Ksenia Naydenova, Allyson Metcalf, Yulia Fomina, and Mary Northcutt gathered 18 points with a time of 1:53.47; however, Wingate grabbed spots one and four with Emory checking in at second and third to gain the majority of the points in the event.

The group of Postma, Aguiar, Fomina, and Culp collected the top time in the 400-yard freestyle relay recording the time of 3:37.12 for 32 points. The C-N 'B' team of Northcutt, Regina Zipperer, Meredith Gin, and Kelsey Robins added an additional 20 with a fifth-place finish (3:42.89)

The men's relay collected two of the top-five finishes in the event with Seth Hughes, Andrei Roman, Ivo Kunzle, and Chad Andoljsek finished in third with a time of 1:34.06. C-N's 'B' team of Andrei Ungur, Garrett Stelling, Matthew George, and Jonny Goss rounded out the top-five with a time of 1:36.61 as the two teams combined for 44 points.

Postma grabbed the top-finish for the Eagles and 16 points in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.16 seconds. Emory would go on to claim the next six sports before Mary Northcutt (24.97) and Elly Culp (24.98) combined for 19 points. Postma's time is currently No. 11 out of all Division II swimmers.

The freshman Ginn collected her second individual event win of the weekend with day two's coming in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:25.41. The time sits Ginn near the top-20 times in the nation.

Ginn followed up the event win with a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:35.31 finishing ahead of Emory's Maria Turcanu at 4:37.89

Caleb Howell collected yet another individual win in his junior season pushing his total to six. His time of 2:03.77 in the 200-yard breaststroke is fourth in all of D2.

Marcelo Figueredo capped a top-six spot in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:25.79 to claim nine points. Wingate would have three swimmers finish in the top-five to outweigh C-N's point total.  Despite the finish, Figueiredo's time is seventh in the nation, but five swimmers from the weekend hold the spots two through six.

Freshman Andrei Ungur grabbed second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.53 nearly being edged by Wingate's Niklas Martin at 51.43 seconds. Martin's time is currently No. 21 in the country with Ungur at No. 23.

Jonny Goss recorded a fourth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.41 to grab 11 points. Andoljsek and Kunzle were in at No. 8 and No. 9 with times of 21.74 and 21.87 seconds.

"Overall I am pleased with the team," Coach Jordan Taylor said. "I feel I got out of the meet exactly what I was looking for. It was challenging racing Emory and Wingate who are two really strong teams, but if the swimmers take the time to reflect on the whole weekend, they can learn a lot from our first road meet. Another very tough tests and we certainly held our own again."

Taylor's group will return home next Saturday, Nov. 10 when they face Lees-McRae.
