Eagles soar away with first win of the season

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team won their fourth straight match against Tennessee Wesleyan with an 8-1 victory on Friday afternoon, it was the Eagles first win of the 2017 season.

 "We played better tennis today in doubles and singles." Carson-Newman tennis coach Jean Love said, "It was important for us to come out and start early doing the right things, using the right tactics, and cutting down on the unforced errors. For the most part, we did this and it hulped us be successful. We need to build on this and continue to get better." 

 

The Carson-Newman (1-3) women's tennis team took two out of three matches in doubles play on Friday afternoon. The No.1 doubles team of Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) and Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) shutout Tennessee Wesleyan (3-2) 8-0. The all-freshman tandem of Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) and Klara Vuckovic (Germany) won 8-1 at No.2 doubles. Lindy Tatum (Henderson, Tenn.) and Sydney Ledington (Corbin, Ky.) lost in the finals doubles match of the afternoon 8-5.

 

Harris and Corsato-Owsianka carried their momentum into singles play, each picking up a straight sets victory over the Bulldogs. Harris won her first match of the season at No.1 singles (6-1, 6-2), while Corsato-Owsianka picked up her second victory of the season at the No.2 singles position (6-2, 6-0).

 

The Eagles Freshman trio of Liashova, Vukovic, and Tatum excelled in their first collegiate home match. Liashova won in straight sets over Haruka Hirata 6-4, 6-4. Vukovic easily defeated Wendi Watson at the No.4 singles position 6-2, 6-2. Tatum defeated Arianna Pelletti 6-1, 6-3 at the No.5 singles position giving the freshman trio a combined 3-0 record on the day.

 

Ledington rounded things out for the women's team winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 over Rachel Walker at the No.6 singles position.  

 

The women's tennis team will have a quick turnaround and begin South Atlantic Conference play on Sunday afternoon against Anderson University at 2 p.m.
