JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team opened up South Atlantic Conference play with a 7-2 loss to Anderson on Sunday afternoon.
Carson-Newman (1-3, 0-1) lost two out of three matches in doubles play. Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) and Klara Vuckovic (Germany) defeated Anderson's (7-2, 1-0) No.2 doubles combination 8-3. Meanwhile, the No.1 doubles tandem of Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) and Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) lost for the second time this season. While Lindy Tatum (Henderson, Tenn.) and Sydney Ledington (Corbin, Ky.) lost for a third straight time to start out the year.
Harris (1-4) was unable to replicate her winning ways on the court from Friday's match against Tennessee Wesleyan as she lost in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) at the No.1 singles position. Corsato-Owsianka (2-3) did not fare much better at the No.2 singles position falling in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Liashova (2-3) won the first set easily at 6-1, but then lost a close second set tiebreaker 7-6, and lost the final set 6-1.
Tatum (1-3) lost at the No.5 singles position 6-3, 6-1. Vuckovic (1-3) entered the match on Sunday with a bit of momentum after a win on Friday afternoon. Vuckovic won in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) at the No.4 singles position. With the match already decided Ledington played only played one set at No.6 singles and lost 8-6.
The Eagles next match will be on the road against Tusculum at 1:00 p.m.
