JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Saturday marked another impressive day for Carson-Newman in consecutive weekends as the Eagles brought home the top two spots in the high jump, and Luke Greer broke a program indoor record at the 2018 ETSU Buccaneer Invitational.
Greer, a native of Northampton, England, collected an eighth-place finish in the 800-meters and broke the school record for indoors with a time of 1:58.61.
The previous record stood since 2015 when current senior Anthony Jackson recorded a time of 2:00.15 in the South Atlantic Conference Championships.
"It was a good day, I thought we took a step forward," Coach David Needs stated. "For Luke to run last night and do what he did today is phenomenal."
Tanner Stepp recorded a first-place finish in the high jump for the third time during the indoor season after clearing a height of 2.12 meters on his first attempt. The height now marks a new season-best for the All-American senior.
Junior Jahvad McDermott, who comes off a week in which he claimed league athlete of the week honors, sat runner up to his own teammate in the event. The Brooklyn, New York native cleared a height 2.06 meters which was good enough for second overall, finishing ahead of Appalachian State senior jumper Nick Hinton.
McDermott also competed in the triple jump garnering the No. 3 spot clearing a distance of 14.58 meters, the second longest jump this season.
Freshman Noah Robertson turned in a third-place finish in the pole vault clearing a height of 4.45 meters which is a new season-best.
Despite making it to the 60-meter dash finals, senior Kieran Showler-Davis did not participate on Saturday due to a nagging injury. The Winchester, England native turned in a time of 6.80 seconds yesterday in the event for the fifth-best time in the nation. Devon Moore who also made the final, was held out due to precautionary reasons.
Logan Pender earned personal records in each three of his throws in the shot put and moved up to seventh in the conference maxing out at a distance of 13.35 meters on the day.
"All those things are points for the conference meet in a few weeks so that was great to see from him," Needs mentioned. "You want kids to come in with confidence and they walked away with confidence as well following this weekend."
The ETSU Buccaneer Invitational marked the final tune-up for C-N track & field before the SAC Indoor Championships which take place on Feb. 19 in Winston Salem, N.C.
"This weekend was a good impression to see where you're at with the competition with SoCon schools and a couple league schools competing," Needs added. "It was also great to see the leadership from Kieran and Samantha Gudger who weren't competing today but they were very supporting of all our athletes."
