C-N fights injury bug, battles in trip to Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman Track & Field wrapped up the trip to the Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium, home of the Volunteers, for the Tennessee Challenge on Saturday.

The full list of schools competing included Tennessee, Alabama-Huntsville, Belmont, Carson-Newman, Clayton State, Jacksonville State, Lee (Tenn.), Limestone, Montreat, Mount Olive, North Greenville, Piedmont, Queens (N.C.), Tennessee Tech, Tennessee Wesleyan, Tusculum, and Vanderbilt.

Caleb Agee, who took home the league title in the 400-meter hurdles two weeks ago, finished fifth at the meet in the event recording a time of 54.28 seconds.  

Ray Artybidge earned a top-three spot in the long jump clearing a distance of 6.88 meters, just .01 meters off of a second-place finish.

Abby Tomkoski registered fourth-place for the Eagles in the triple jump with a mark of 11.06 meters marking a new personal-best.

"For her to have four jumps better than her PR his awesome," Coach David Needs mentioned. "It was great to see that to wrap up the day to go along with what Amanda was able to do today for us." 

Amanda Lowe turned in a time of 12.56 seconds in the 100-meter dash for C-N which rounded out the top-10 sprinters, which earned a new season-best. 

Tia Davis rounded out the top-eight times in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.61 seconds, with teammate Cierra Henderson at No. 10 with a time of 25.79.

David Snodgrass (34.18 meters), Austin Gramann (33.55 meters), and Draven Green (31.96 meters) held the 10 through 12 spots respectively in the hammer throw for C-N.

Trayzel Jureidini-Wyche (44.24 meters) and Snodgrass (42.72 meters) claimed the fifth and sixth positions for C-N in the javelin throw.

Jureidini-Wyche, a second-team all-conference performer in the discus earned sixth in the meet with a distance of 41.72 meters. Snodgrass (35.58 meters), Pender (34.75 meters) and Green (28.80 meters) all rounded out the top-10 for C-N.

Tori Gaul, who was one of the six Eagles to earn a conference title two weeks prior, finished fifth in the pole vault clearing a height of 3.60 meters before coming up short on all three attempts at 3.75 meters.

Samantha Gudger and Shelby Reynolds each held top-eight spots for C-N in the long jump. Gudger, who earned a SAC title in the event, held fifth-place clearing a distance of 5.55 meters. Reynolds came in at No. 7 with a distance of 5.22 meters. Lexi Sczerba checked in at No. 11 clearing 4.23 meters.

Madison Bunch was the lone Eagle to clear the bar in the high jump claiming seventh-place with a jump of 1.50 meters. The mark falls just short of Morristown natives' personal-best of 1.51 meters.

Logan Pender (13.80 meters), Gramann (12.70 meters), Blake Hill (11.77 meters) and Green (11.56 meters) all marked for C-N in the shot put holding positions five through eight respectively.

A number of athletes for C-N bowed out of their respective events due to precautionary health-related reasons.

"We'll see what we decide to do for next week," Needs added. "It's unfortunate we didn't have some people compete but it was also nice to see some of the kids get that experience against some good talent."
