JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman Track & Field now turns its attention to the South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships which is set to take place in Charlotte, N.C. at the Irwin Belk Complex, a site in which the Eagles have already visited in 2018.
C-N had the opportunity to see the site just a couple week ago for the Johnson C. Smith Invitational. The Irwin Belk Complex will also be the host for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in May.
Following the league indoor championships in February, the men's team came away with a fourth-place finish and the women's side collected 40 points for sixth.
"There will be some different events as opposed to indoor and some things are more challenging with trying to find the right people and put them in the right places," Needs explained. "I can't say enough about our coaching staff. So many athletes have gotten dramatically better and their best days are still to come."
Two C-N athletes collected league honors following the one-day meet as Kristofer Potts-Howard took home the Field Athlete of the Year from the conference after turning in top-four finishes in three different events throughout the day.
Sprinter Devon Moore earned the Freshman Athlete of the Year after collecting national qualifying runs in both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes en route to second-place finishes. The Eagles, however, will be without Moore this weekend who is recovering from an injury suffered in the Indoor National Championships.
"A coach never wants to say injuries are a part of it because we still have to go out there with who we have and do the very best we can," Needs said. "We've got some people who we were counting on that are injured but that's not going to define us this weekend. We've got some exceptional people going this weekend who can go out there and write a strong chapter in their career."
Different from the Indoor Championships, the SAC Outdoor Championships will take place over a two-day period, on April 19-20.
