Dyer grabs TSWA weekly honor

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Carson-Newman freshman Ren Dyer (Weaverville, N.C.) has been lauded as the Tennessee Sportswriters Association State Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday.

Dyer becomes the first Eagle to earn a player of the week honor since Grant Teichmann picked up a TSWA player of the week honor on Jan. 15, 2019.

Dyer is the first freshman to win a weekly honor for C-N since Charles Clark on Feb. 9, 2015.

The freshman has been off to an otherworldly start to his C-N career.  He is the third freshman in the last 21 years to produce five consecutive games scoring in double digits.

Last week, he helped C-N to a 1-1 record with a 19-point stomping of Lenoir-Rhyne and a narrow one-point loss to No. 12 Queens. He averaged 14.0 points and 10.5 rebounds for the pair of contests.

He made 7-of-15 field goals with four 3-pointers for 18 points in a one-point loss to Queens University, adding nine rebounds and two assists. The freshman added a pair of triples and finished with 10 points along with 12 rebounds and three assists versus Lenoir-Rhyne.

It marked just the fifth double-double by a Carson-Newman freshman in the last 20 years and in the seventh game of the season for Dyer. He is averaging 12.7 points and 6.4 boards per game this year.

Dyer and the rest of the Eagles will be in action Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Bluefield State.  Coverage on the Eagle Sports Network starts
