Hibbett tabbed for TSWA Offensive POTW honor

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman football running back Andy Hibbett has been named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association's Offensive Player of the Week following his performance in the Eagles' homecoming win over North Greenville, the organization announced Wednesday.

Hibbett set a Carson-Newman record for consecutive 100-yard rushing performances with his sixth in a row.  He also crested 175 yards for a third straight game.  Hibbett rushed 33 times for 183 yards and a pair of scores in the Eagles' 21-point comeback win over North Greenville 35-34 on homecoming.

His 33 rushes are a career high and the high water mark for the Eagle football program since quarterback Brandon Haywood rushed 34 times in a playoff win over Lenoir-Rhyne in 2012.

The Corryton, Tenn.-native led Carson-Newman in rushing for a sixth time this season.   Hibbett also became the 23rd Eagle running back with 1,000 yards rushing in a season - his 1,096 are good for the 19th highest tally at this juncture.

Hibbett also moves past Vernon Turner and into 11th place on the career rushing yards list with 2,913 career yards.  At 34 career rushing touchdowns, Hibbett needs one more to move into a tie for eighth on the all-time list with Robert Thomas.

Hibbett is C-N's second TSWA honoree this year. De'Andre Thomas won offensive player of the week honors after leading C-N to a 35-33 win at Catawba.

The Eagles are back in action Saturday with a battle against fourth-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne.  Kickoff between the Eagles' and Bears is slated for 1 p.m. with a noon Appalachian Electric Cooperative Tailgate Show on the Eagle Sports Network on Joy 620 (WRJZ-AM, Knoxville), Mountain Country 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
