VIDEO: Randall Freeman Interview
AUSTIN, Texas – Carson-Newman football running back Randall Freeman (Ooltewah, Tenn.) has been chosen as a Capital One Academic All-American.
Freeman becomes Carson-Newman football's second Capital One Academic All-American this decade and the third this century. He joins Curt Duncan (2012) and Keith Ackard (2000).
"Randall, for a guy that's a two-sport star, to find ways to contribute in major ways to both football and track," Carson-Newman head coach Ken Sparks said. "That's a great compliment to him. So many people talk about how they don't have time for this and that. Here's a guy who's a two-sport star who focuses on the grades to boot. What a great example for all of us."
Freeman is one of a cadre of Carson-Newman running backs to tote the rock this season. A graphic design major with a 3.86 GPA. Freeman is a four-time member of the Dean's List and a two-time Eagle Scholar.
"It's truly a blessing to be able to get to work on and off the field and be successful at it," Freeman said. "I attribute it to my family who's instilled hard work and focus into every endeavor that I go into."
The senior from Chattanooga has carried the ball 63 times for 343 yards this season. He averaged 44.7 yards per game and scored a touchdown on senior day against Wingate.
"My parents have always pushed me to strive for the best," Freeman said. "I think I've always kept that in my mind and it's something I've tried to do since I was young."
