Carson-Newman's Ashby, Hay garner first team All-SAC honors; Kim-Moss named SAC Freshman of the Year

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Carson-Newman junior Liam Ashby (Dublin, Ireland) and sophomore Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) have been named to the 2011 first team All-South Atlantic Conference men's golf team, while freshman Jonathan Kim-Moss (Mississauga, Canada) was named Freshman of the Year, league officials announced Friday.

Ashby's strokes per round average of 73 ranked fifth in the conference. He had three top five finishes on the season, including a second place finish in the Will Wilson Invitational in the fall. Ashby was a first team selection in 2010 and garnered second team honors as a freshman.

Hay, whose scoring average of 73.3 ranked seventh in the SAC, had two top five finish on the season, including second place showings in the Richard Rendleman Invitational and the Bearcat Golf Classic.

"(Ashby and Hay's) scores have counted every tournament we've played in," C-N head coach John Minor said. "Both are very hard workers and play fearless golf. They both are ranked in the top 15 in the strongest region in the country."

In his first collegiate season, Kim-Moss had a 75.7 stroke average. He shot a season-best 69 and finished 13th overall at the Bearcat Golf Classic. During the final round of the Bearcat Classic, Kim-Moss was the lone golfer to hit all 18 greens in regulation.

"(Kim-Moss) played average in fall had to grow up quickly and he has," Minor said. "His confidence has grown dramatically and for a freshman that is a compliment to him. I'm proud of all three of them, and they are a pleasure to coach."

Newberry College's Matthew Campbell, who averaged 72.2 strokes per round and shot a season-low 68 on three separate occasions, was named the Men's Golfer of the Year.

Joining Campbell, Ashby and Hay on the first team are: Ben Lown and Daniel Stanley from Newberry.

The second team consists of: Evan Kilchenstein from Catawba; Brandon Squier from Lenoir-Rhyne; Eric Kennedy and Jamie Chapman from Lincoln Memorial, and Nick York from Tusculum.

Newberry head men's coach Brian McCants, who guided the Wolves to four tournament championships and four other top-five finishes, was named Men's Coach of the Year. He wins this award for the fourth year in a row.

Lown was named the men's golf Scholar-Athlete. The Scholar-Athlete award is selected by the SAC's Faculty Athletic Representative committee.

The 2011 Food Lion SAC men's golf championships begin Monday at Rock Barn Golf and Spa in Conover, N.C. The awards will be presented following Tuesday's final round.
