Eagles rope in a win in overtime

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Carson-Newman (2-1) seized a close match against Lees McRae (0-3) winning 2-1 in overtime on Monday night.

Matheus Bachi (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) scored the first goal of the game, his second of the season, in the 8th minute off a ball from Ross Frame (Welshpool, Powys, United Kingdom). Frame sent the ball across; it was flicked on to Bachi who placed it in the corner. "The boys played well and got an early lead," said Carson-Newman head coach Richard Moodie.

In the 61st minute, Scott Alford tied it up for the Bobcats off a ball from Jordan Wright. Wright sent a pass in behind the Eagles' defense and Alford sent a curling shot into the back of the net for his first goal of the season. It was a well-earned goal as the Bobcats outshot the Eagles 22 to 13.

"It wasn't the best going into overtime," said Moodie. "The team had a good performance, great effort and showed a lot of heart."

Less than three minutes into overtime, Frame did a one-two pass with Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) around a defender and took a tight angle shot over the keeper to score the golden goal and win the game for the Eagles.

Frame, Kristian Speake (Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, United Kingdom), and Christopher Trejo (Guatemala City, Guatemala) each took two shots landing one on net for Carson-Newman. Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) led the Eagles with three shots, none of which were on frame.

Senior captain Rumwald Le Guevel (Vannes, France) doubled the Bobcats' keeper in saves 6 to 3.

"The boys really pulled together to pick up a win on the road," said Moodie. "Now we are looking forward to conference play on Saturday."
