GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (11-4, 7-3 SAC) defeated conference rival Tusculum (5-10, 2-8 SAC) 1-0 in overtime Wednesday night.
"It was a great win," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "They were a decent team. They hung around and made it difficult for us."
Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) claimed the lone goal of the match. He beat the keeper to the left and slotted the ball near post 59 seconds into overtime for the golden goal win.
The Eagles outshot the Pioneers 18 to five. Nico Noll (Esens, Niedersachsen, Germany) led C-N in shots having taken five, three of which were on target. Welo had four shots, all on net while Ross Frame (Welshpool, Powys, United Kingdom) released four shots and landed three on goal.
"We bothered them with shots," Moodie said. "We should have won it, could have won it."
Tyler Linkous was the only Pioneer to tally up shots. He had five shots and placed two on frame.
Senior captain Rumwald Le Guevel (Vannes, France) tallied up two saves during the game. He is currently second in the SAC in both saves and save percentage with 69 and .802 respectively.
"They posed a couple threats on us there at the end," Moodie said, "but we had plenty of chances to win it."
Tusculum keeper Ashley Elsey made 11 saves on the match.
Frame holds his top spot in the conference with 35 points. He leads in the assists category with nine, is in second with 13 goals, and third with 62 shots.
"They did well," Moodie said, "but the best team won."
The Eagles moved up to third in the SAC standings. They head to Anderson for their final match of regular season Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
