Eagle Swimmers Host Milligan Tuesday

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles men's and women's swimming teams will host the Milligan Buffaloes men's and women's swimming team for a meet at the Maddox Swimming Pool on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.

The meet is Carson-Newman's second of the season after falling to Limestone in men's and women's meets on Oct. 12 in Jefferson City.

"I think it will be a great event for our athletes and for our fans," said Carson-Newman head men's and women's swimming coach Paige McCord. "I think the loss to Limestone was a good learning moment for us, I think we took a lot away from that. I think tomorrow night we will have a good opportunity to come back and in addition to that we are two weeks away from our midseason 'rest' meet called the 'Fall Frenzy' and so we've been doing some specific utility work to prepare for that. So I believe our results tomorrow should show speed."

The men's team fell to Limestone 157-105, and was paced by junior Stephen Parson (Auburn, Ala.) who picked up victories in the men's 200-yard and 100-yard freestyle heats. His time in the 200-yard race was 1:43, with his 100-yard time of :46.41. Parsons also anchored Carson-Newman's 400 yard freestyle relay, helping C-N finish just under a second shy of Limestone.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how some of our freshmen show up in some of the speed events," McCord said about the men's team. "We've been doing some specific training on the endurance side so we should have some substantial time drops and opportunities for them to get best times in their distance events.

The women's team fell to Limestone 139-113, and the Eagles saw freshman Natalie Burnett (Sevierville, Tenn.) pick up victories in the 100-yard butterfly (:59.04) and 200-yard butterfly (2:10.33). Carson-Newman won the women's 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:51, and freshman Samantha Starnes (Knoxville, Tenn.) won the women's 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:18.

"On the women's side we've been plagued by a little bit of injuries, so I'm looking forward to seeing some of our athletes swim that may not have had the opportunity to swim in the first few meets," McCord said.

Milligan has had a busy fall schedule, competing at the following schools: Brenau, Mars Hill, King, and Sewanee (GA). The Buffaloes fell just short against rival King, losing 198-191 on Oct. 24.
