Carson-Newman Finishes Sixth at Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles men's and women's swimming teams concluded their stay at the 2014 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship meet at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center on Sunday.

Sunday's events wrapped up a busy weekend of swimming for the Eagles as Carson-Newman continues its inaugural season of intercollegiate varsity swimming.

In the women's competition, Carson-Newman finished sixth with 568 points with Wingate winning the meet with 1395.5 points. Carson-Newman also finished sixth in the men's competition with 495 points, with Wingate winning that meet with 1394.5 points.

In the women's 1650-yard freestyle, Carson-Newman freshman Taylor Bing (Memphis, Tenn.) finished in eighth place with a time of 17:42.68. In the men's 1650-yard freestyle, Carson-Newman freshman Brandon Calfee (Morristown, Tenn.), finished 17th with a time of 18:22.12.

In the women's 200-yard backstroke, Carson-Newman freshman Amanda Henderson (Bartlett, Tenn.) finished in sixth place with a time of 2:02.96.

In the women's 100-yard freestyle, Carson-Newman junior Aly Kaywork (Fernandina Beach, Fla.), finished in 15th place with a time of 53.61. In the men's 100-yard freestyle, Carson-Newman junior Stephen Parsons (Auburn, Ala.) finished in seventh place with a time of 45.39. Also in the men's 100-yard freestyle, Carson-Newman senior Ben Young placed 11th with a time of 45.67.

In the women's 200-yard breaststroke, Carson-Newman freshman Nancy Claire Smith (Franklin, Tenn.) finished eighth with a time of 2:29.05. In the men's 200-yard breaststroke, Carson-Newman freshman Kent Eldreth (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished in ninth place with a time of 2:03.99.

In the men's 200-yard butterfly, Carson-Newman freshman Joshua Grover (Villa Rica, Ga.) finished in seventh place with a time of 1:52.74.

In the women's 400-yard freestyle relay, the Carson-Newman team of Samantha Starnes, Taylor Bing, Whitney Owne, and Aly Kaywork finished in fifth place with a time of 3:33.50. In the men's 400-yard freestyle relay, the Carson-Newman team of Ben Young, Drew Rutledge, Sam Schechter, and Stephen Parsons finished in sixth place with a time of 3:03.38.
