Eagle Swimmers Finish Second Day at Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles men's and women's swimming teams continued to compete strong on the second day of the 2014 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship meet at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center on Saturday.

Carson-Newman continued its strong swimming from Friday, and has put itself in good position for the final day on Sunday.

"The athletes are having sensational swims!" said Carson-Newman head swimming coach Paige McCord. "As a coach, I am not surprised though. We have many in the hunt for nationals, so this is a wait and see game now. Every athlete is improving by significant marks and making cuts, which shows the coaching staff what tremendous work really was put in this year and where our team currently stands as this inaugural season wraps and moving forward into next."

In the women's competition, Carson-Newman is in sixth place with 379 points, with Wingate in first place with 976.5 points through 26 events.

In the men's competition, Carson-Newman is in sixth place with 348 points, while Queens is in first place with 978.5 points through 26 events.

In the women's 200-yard medley relay, Carson-Newman's team of Whitney Owen, Aly Kaywork, Amanda Henderson, and Samantha Starnes came in sixth place with a time of 1:48.54.

In the men's 200-yard medley relay, Carson-Newman's team of Ben Young, Kent Eldreth, Joshua Grover, and Sam Schechter came in fourth place with a time of 1:31.83.

In the women's 400-yard individual medley, Carson-Newman freshman Nancy Claire Smith (Franklin, Tenn.) finished in 10th place with a time of 4:37.22.

In the men's 400-yard individual medley, Carson-Newman freshman Joshua Grover (Villa Rica, Ga.) finished in sixth place with a time of 4:02.27 earning him All-Conference honors. Grover also placed 15th in the men's 100-yard flystroke with a time of 52.01.

In the women's 200-yard freestyle, Carson-Newman freshman Taylor Bing (Memphis, Tenn.) finished in 10th pace with a time of 1:54.66. In the men's 200-yard freestyle, Carson-Newman junior Stephen Parsons (Auburn, Ala.) finished in eighth place with a time of 1:39.66.

In the women's 800-yard freestyle relay, the Carson-Newman team of Nancy Claire Smith, Kelly Faulkner, Amanda Henderson, and Taylor bing finished in seventh place with a time of 7:51.82. In the men's 800-yard freestyle relay, the Carson-Newman team of Drew Rutledge, Luke Johnson, Joshua Grover, and Stephen Parsons finished in ninth place with a time of 6:55.86.

In the women's 100-yard breaststroke, Nancy Claire Smith finished in 14th place with a time of 1:07.82. In the men's 100-yard breaststroke, Carson-Newman freshman Kent Eldreth (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished in eighth place with a time of 56.22.

In the women's 100-yard backstroke, Carson-Newman freshman Amanda Henderson (Bartlett, Tenn.) finished in seventh place with a time of 57.43. In the men's 100-yard backstroke, senior Ben Young finished in 13th place with a time of 51.58.
