JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – For the first time ever, Carson-Newman's Maddox Swimming Pool will see collegiate competition Thursday at 5 p.m. C-N's first swim team will hit the water for the Inaugural Splash – an intra-squad Orange v. Blue meet.
"It's a significant day in my program's history," McCord said. "We finally get the opportunity to introduce what a collegiate swim meet looks like to the Jefferson City and Carson-Newman communities."
The event is the culmination of nine months of planning since McCord was announced as the first swim coach in Carson-Newman history in December of 2012. Over that time span, McCord filled a roster with 31 Eagles in preparation for C-N's first meet.
While the results from the Inaugural Splash won't affect C-N's overall record, McCord said the Eagles can learn much from the event.
"We have some swimmers that have only swam in one to two events in their specialties," McCord said. "We need to see some second specialties for where they might fit in on relays. We're also interested in having some kids swim some different events, see where they are and check our speed after the first month of training on campus."
McCord said she realizes that this event wouldn't be possible without both the Carson-Newman and Jefferson City communities buying into the program.
"We've had so much support and want put on a good show while teaching people about the sport of swimming," McCord said. "We'll have a fun environment. It'll be a great time to make history."
At the conclusion of the swim meet, Eagle fans can get autographs from members of the inaugural swim team.
