Carson-Newman Finishes Strong at Fall Frenzy

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles men's and women's swimming teams continued posting low times at the Fall Frenzy Invitational hosted by Wingate University at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center on Sunday in the final day of competition.

The three-day meet concludes the fall portion of the Carson-Newman swimming schedule.

"This meet was a great measuring stick for the Eagles," said Carson-Newman head swimming coach Paige McCord. "I was pleased to swim several season and personal bests. The team is working hard in and out of the pool, and the results are showing. We are now exactly halfway through our season, and have a substantial 2 months ahead of us for solid training. We will have a few smaller meets as well in that time frame, all to get ready for conference at this same pool."

In the women's team competition, Carson-Newman finished in sixth place with 489 points. The College of Charleston won the women's meet with 1492 points.

In the men's team competition, Carson-Newman finished in ninth place with 475 points. Queens University of Charlotte won the men's meet with 1443.5 points, edging out the College of Charleston 1443.5-1440.5.

Junior Stephen Parsons (Auburn, Ala.) turned in one of Carson-Newman's best finishes of the day in the 100-yard freestyle as he finished third with a time of 45.59.

Freshman Landis Cranford (Greensboro, N.C.) saw one of the biggest time drops of the day by finishing 22nd in the men's 200-yard breaststroke, as he posted a time of 2:17.95, a 13-second drop from his previous time.

Freshman Ethan Webster (Suwanee, Ga.) finished seventh in the men's 1650-yard freestyle, with a time of 16:32.60. Also in the men's 1650-yard freestyle, freshman Brandon Calfee (Morristown, Tenn.) finished 16th with a time of 17:26.05 and freshman Austin Murphy (Morristown, Tenn.) came in 19th with a time of 18:39.52. In the women's 1650-yard freestyle, freshman Taylor Bing (Memphis, Tenn.) finished in 13th place with a time of 18:14.45.

Freshman Josh Grover (Villa Rica, Ga.) earned a "B" Cut time of 1:57.78 in the men's 200-yard butterfly.

Freshman Nancy Claire Smith (Franklin, Tenn.) finished 18th in the women's 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.84.

In the men's 400-yard freestyle relay, the Carson-Newman team of Ben Young, Drew Rutledge, Sam Schechter, and Stephen Parsons finished fifth with a time of 3:06.12.

In the women's 400-yard freestyle relay, the Carson-Newman team of Aly Kaywork, Samantha Starnes, Hannah Kiser, and Taylor Bing finished 12th with a time of 3:40.05.

The field at the Fall Frenzy included: host Wingate, Queens, Catawba, College of Charleston, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern, Lenoir-Rhyne, Mars Hill, North Florida, Pfeiffer, St. Andrews and Soka (Calif.).
