Carson-Newman Competitive at Fall Frenzy Friday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles men's and women's swimming teams got off to a solid start at the Fall Frenzy Invitational hosted by Wingate University at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center on Friday.

Carson-Newman saw in-season times drop across the board, as the Eagles competed against some of the top schools in southeast swimming.

"This is a strong first day for us at this point in the season," said Carson-Newman head swimming coach Paige McCord. "Impressed with the poise of depth of our team."

Through the first day of women's competition, Carson-Newman is in sixth place with 227.5 points. Queens leads the women's meet with 446.5 points.

Through the first day of men's competition, Carson-Newman is in eighth place with 141 points. Queens leads the men's meet with 475 points.

Freshman Natalie Burnett (Sevierville, Tenn.) finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.91.

One of the top men's performances came from senior Ben Young won the C final 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.42, while junior Stephen Parsons (Auburn, Ala.) finished 10th in the "B" Final with a 21.19.

The Carson-Newman women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Samantha Starnes, Whitney Owen, Aly Kaywork, and Burnett finished fourth with a time of 1:37.01.

The Carson-Newman men's 200-yard freestyle relay team  of Young, Andrew Rutledge, Sam Schecter, and Parsons placed eighth with a time of 1.25.66

Freshman Nancy Claire Smith (Franklin, Tenn.) placed 15th in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:11.23.

Junior Kelly Faulkner (Lawrenceville, Ga.) came in 22nd in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:21.99.

The field at the Fall Frenzy includes: host Wingate, Queens, Catawba, College of Charleston, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern, Lenoir-Rhyne, Mars Hill, North Florida, Pfeiffer, St. Andrews and Soka (Calif.).

The meet will continue into its second day on Saturday at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Results and a full recap of the final two days' events as the Eagles participate in the Fall Frenzy will be available on www.cneagles.com throughout the weekend.
