Carson-Newman Defeats Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles men's and women's swimming teams posted a pair of combined victories over Lenoir-Rhyne and Catawba on Saturday at the Shuford Education Center Pool on Saturday afternoon.

Carson-Newman's combined teams score beat Catawba 201-187, while beating Lenoir-Rhyne 245-136. The Carson-Newman women defeated Catawba 113-83, then beat Lenoir-Rhyne 128-61. The Carson-Newman men beat Lenoir-Rhyne 117-75 while falling to Catawba 104-88.

"This was a full team combined effort," said Carson-Newman head swimming coach Paige McCord. "That effort led to a pair of unprecendented wins against two conference foes in Lenoir-Rhyne and Catawba."

The Carson-Newman women's 400-yard medley relay team of Amanda Henderson, Nancy Claire Smith, Natalie Burnett, and Aly Kaywork won the event with a time of 4:06.48. The Carson-Newman women's team of Taylor Bing, Hannah Kiser, Samantha Starnes, and Aly Kaywork finished second in the women's 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:42.88.

The Carson-Newman men's team of Sam Schechter, Drew Rutledge, Ben Young, and Stephen Parsons won the men's 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:11.63. The Carson-Newman men's team of Stephen Parsons, Kent Eldreth, Joshua Grover, and Sam Schechter finished second in the men's 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:36.48.

Freshman Taylor Bing (Memphis, Tenn.) won the women's 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:59.50. Bing also finished second in the women's 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:24.74.

Freshman Natalie Burnett (Sevierville, Tenn.) won the women's 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.12. Burnett also won the women's 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:14.68.

Senior Ben Young won the men's 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.75. Young also finished second in the men's 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.49.

Freshman Joshua Grover (Villa Rica, Ga.) won the men's 200-yard butterfly stroke with a time of 1:59.86. Grover also finished second in the men's 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.49.

Freshman Samantha Starnes (Knoxville, Tenn.) won the women's 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.38.

Freshman Amanda Henderson (Bartlett, Tenn.) won the women's 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.56.

Freshman Nancy Claire Smith (Franklin, Tenn.) won the women's 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:27.12.

Carson-Newman will next compete at the conference championships in Mecklenburg, N.C. from Feb. 12-14.
