Carson-Newman Improves at Fall Frenzy Saturday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles men's and women's swimming teams continued posting low times at the Fall Frenzy Invitational hosted by Wingate University at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center on Saturday in the second day of competition.

"We saw some excellent swimming today, especially in finals," said Carson-Newman head swimming coach Paige McCord. "We are now preparing for day three, and we are looking to finish the meet well."

In the women's team competition, the Eagles finished Saturday where they began, in sixth place with 388 points. College of Charleston leads the women's meet with 1032 points.

In the men's team completion, the Eagles dropped from eighth on Friday to ninth following Saturday's events with 292 points. College of Charleston also leads the men's meet with 991.5 points.

Junior Stephen Parsons (Auburn, Ala.) turned in one of Carson-Newman's best finishes of the day in the 200-yard freestyle as he finished second with a time of 1:40.69, just .12 behind the race winner.

The Carson-Newman women's 200-yard medley relay team of Amanda Henderson, Aly Kaywork, Natalie Burnett, and Samantha Starnes finished eighth with a time of 1:49.90.

In the women's 800-yard freestyle relay, the Carson-Newman team of Hannah Kiser, Nancy Smith, Kelly Faulkner, and Taylor Bing finished fifth with a time of 7:50.01.

In the men's 800-yard freestyle relay, the Carson-Newman team of Joshua Grover, Drew Rutledge, Ethan Webster, and Parsons finished 10th with a time of 7:09.16.

In the men's 200-yard medley relay, the Carson-Newman team of Connor Graham, James Eldreth, Tommy Bourgeois, and Ben Young finished 11th with a time of 1:38.81.

Burnett continued her strong weekend with a ninth place finish, leading Group B, with a time of 58.13 in the women's 100-yard backstroke.

Freshman Drew Rutledge (Lexington, S.C.) saw his 200-yard freestyle time drop to 1:47.30 as he finished in 22nd place in Group C.

Freshman Taylor Bing (Memphis, Tenn. ) also saw her time in the 200-yard freestyle drop to 1:55.10, finishing 18th.

The field at the Fall Frenzy includes: host Wingate, Queens, Catawba, College of Charleston, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern, Lenoir-Rhyne, Mars Hill, North Florida, Pfeiffer, St. Andrews and Soka (Calif.).

The meet will continue into its final day on Sunday at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Results and a full recap of the final day's events as the Eagles participate in the Fall Frenzy will be available on www.cneagles.com.
