Eagles close out first weekend of sand with losses to top-10 teams

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Facing off against No. 6 Florida State (10-4) and No. 8 Georgia State (12-1), the Carson-Newman Eagles (0-6) dropped a pair of duals 5-0 Sunday afternoon at the Carolina Sand Volleyball Complex to wrap the programs first weekend of sand volleyball competition.

"We came in to the weekend not knowing what to expect," Carson-Newman coach Dan Ahiers said. "Both, the coaches and the players, learned a lot. I think we're all very excited to get to practice and prepare ourselves for next weekend."

Dual No. 1 – No. 6 Florida State 5, Carson-Newman 0

Once again the combination of Rachel Harper (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Jenna Wilson (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) one of the top duos in the country but fell just short to Kristina Pellitteri and Victoria Paranagua 22-20 and 21-11.

Combining for the first time this season, Sara Fairley (Charlotte, N.C.) and Kristen Pickett (Cleveland, Tenn.) fell 21-15 and 21-8 to Sarah Wickstrom and Sierra Sanchez.

Also pairing up for the first time this year, Taylor Lowe (Franklin, Tenn.) and Kristina Hill (Lake Orion, Mich.) hung tough with Vanessa Freire and Annie Montgomery but lost 21-13 and 21-14.

Morgan Harlan (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) and Lindsey Wells (Morristown, Tenn.) fell to Taylor Nyquist and Katherine Plessy 21-8 and 21-6 while Blyss Harkness and Kayla Joyce defeated Lauren Santarelli (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Anna Patton (Franklin, Tenn.) 21-10 and 21-5.

Magdalena Dostalova and Milani Pickering continued a strong beginning to the year by defeating Harper and Wilson 21-14 and 21-12 in a battle between the two schools top pair.

Fairley and Pickett fell to Katelyn Rawls and Nina Interwies 21-8 and 21-11 and Lowe and Hill were topped by Sara Olivova and Jansen Button 21-3 and 21-9.

Harlan and Wells lost the No. 4 combination to Natalie Wilson and Delaney Rohan 21-5 and 21-8 while Santarelli and Patton were knocked off by Molly Smestad and Alexis Elmurr 21-10 and 21-8 in the No. 5 position.

The Eagles are back on the sand courts this Friday through Sunday in the College of Charleston Sand Tournament with four matches over the three days beginning Friday evening at 5 p.m. against the host College of Charleston.
