Eagles fall just shy against Cougars in CofC Sand Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. – After sitting through a one-hour lighting delay, the Carson-Newman Eagles (0-7) fell just short of their first win on the sand courts falling 5-0 in a dual with the College of Charleston (1-5) Friday evening in the CofC Sand Classic.

"Every time we step onto the court, we experience something new," Carson-Newman coach Dan Ahiers said. "We confront it and we get better from it. Today we learned to play at night with poor lighting. We also learned to work with new people because we mixed up the teams."

The top pair for the Eagles were once again highly competitive but couldn't get over the hump against Melissa Morello and Catey Warren as Rachel Harper (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Jenna Wilson (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) fell 21-18 and 21-16.

The Cougars duo of Liz Theesfeld and Maddie Hills topped Sara Fairley (Charlotte, N.C.) and Kristen Pickett (Cleveland, Tenn.) 21-16 and 21-16 while Taylor Lowe (Franklin, Tenn.) and Anna Patton (Franklin, Tenn.) came up just shy against Bailey Humes and Grace Rebarchak 21-19 and 21-18.

Lauren Santarelli (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Kristina Hill (Lake Orion, Mich.) were the only pair to win a set on the day falling to Lauren Hollman and Mackenzie Cooler 21-12, 20-21 and 12-10.

Working together for the first time this year, Kiayna O'Neal (Katy, Texas) and Morgan Harlan (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) fell to Krissy Mummey and Megan Quigley 21-10 and 21-12.
