Hatters and Dolphins top Eagles on the beach

CHARLESTON, S.C. – In day two of the CofC Sand Classic, the Carson-Newman Eagles (0-9) dropped a pair of 5-0 duals to No. 6 Stetson (13-1) and No. 19 Jacksonville (5-8) Saturday.

"Our team is one of only two Division II schools in the country with an NCAA sand program," Carson-Newman coach Dan Ahiers said. "I keep a quote in my backpack from Thomas J. Watson, 'A man flattened by an opponent can get up again. A man flattened by conformity stays down for good'. We're breaking new ground and we are getting better at it."

The top pairs of Kaley Melville and Julie Bassett against Rachel Harper (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Jenna Wilson (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) battled but the Hatters captured the match 21-12 and 21-15.

Carson-Newman No.2 group of Sara Fairley (Charlotte, N.C.) and Kristen Pickett (Cleveland, Tenn.) were defeated by Maren Rygh and Kristin Lind in the most competitive match between the two programs 21-15 and 21-15.

Taylor Lowe (Franklin, Tenn.) and Anna Patton (Franklin, Tenn.) lost 21-13 and 21-13 to Savannah Byl and Holly Reschke while Lauren Santarelli (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Kristina Hill (Lake Orion, Mich.) lost to Kaylee Anderson and Madison Atkins 21-11 and 21-14.

Kiayna O'Neal (Katy, Texas) and Morgan Harlan (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) fell to Claudia Kalin and Madison Tormey 21-10 and 21-12.

The Dolphins duo of Kelly Koop and Sammie Straughsbaugh topped Harper and Wilson 21-13 and 21-11 while Maya Prestes and Emily Laskelle won 21-15 and 21-13 over Fairley and Pickett.

Lowe and Patton fell just shy of knocking off Lauren Gresham and Christina Finan 21-15 and 21-15, Santarelli and Hill lost to Mackenzie Swan and Jizzy Gesualdo 21-12 and 21-14 and O'Neal and Harlan lost to Olga Nushtayeva and Gaby Nieto 21-16 and 21-8.
