Eagles flying high after day two sweep in Austin Peay Tournament

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman beach volleyball team swept the competition on Saturday afternoon at the Governors Beach Duals tournament.

 

Carson-Newman (2-2) defeated Missouri Baptist University (5-5) 4-1, to begin the afternoon and give the Eagles their second consecutive victory over the Spartans. The Eagles ended the day with a sweep of Division I opponent University of Tennessee- Martin (0-3).

 

Match One: C-N 4, MBU 1

 

The Eagles got out to a quick start and never looked back against the Spartans. The No.5 team of Kendall Cooley (Castle Rock, Colo.) and Natalie Harris (Monroe, N.C.) won the first set with ease 21-12 over Molly Fox and Megan Williams. Cooley and Harris were challenged in the second set but were able to put away their opponents with 21-19 victory.

 

No. 3 pairing of Marnie Streeter (Goldvein, Va.) and Eileen Anderson (Pittstown, N.J.) finished next for the Eagles. The duo played a very competitive opening set falling 21-23. The duo then took over in the second set winning 21-14 and carried the momentum into the final set to win the match 15-9.

 

The No. 4 pairing of Allie Foster (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Morgan Ballard played a very tough and competitive match against Natalie Hecht and Amanda Thibodeaux. Foster and Ballard came away with a 21-18 first set victory. The duo was then pushed to the limit in the second set, but prevailed with a 24-22 win to clinch the victory for the Eagles.

 

The No. 1 pairing of Alex Biro (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and Morgan Harlan (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) lost to the tandem of Hannah Carey and Jen Brendel. Biro and Harlan were competitive throughout both sets falling 21-15, 21-15. The No. 2 pairing of Anna Patton (Franklin, Tenn.) and Taylor Lowe (Franklin, Tenn.) came out of the gates red hot, winning the first set 21-12. The second set was a bit more challenging for the duo, but they prevailed with a 22-20 victory.

 

Abbie McFarlane (McKinney, Texas) and Hannah Robertson (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) put the exclamation point on the victory for the Eagles winning the exhibition match over the Spartans. McFarlane and Robertson won the first 21-17 and battled through a tough second set to come away with 23-21 set clinching win.

 

Match Two: C-N 5, UT-Martin 0

 

Carson-Newman overpowered UT-Martin from start to finish on Saturday evening to complete the sweep of day two competition for the Eagles.

 

The No.1 pairing of Patton and Lowe kept their momentum from the opening match and used it to their advantage. The tandem won the first set with ease 21-13 and then duplicated the result in the second set for a 21-13 straight sets sweep.

 

The No. 2 pairing of Biro and Harlan took on the pairing of Rachel Noffsinger and Hayley Gray. Biro and Harlan dominated the opening set 21-10 and never let up winning the second set 21-9. The No. 3 pairing of Anderson and Streeter won the first set 21-11 and took care of business in the second set winning 21-14.

 

The final pairing for the Eagles on the afternoon was the tandem of Foster and Ballard. The duo won a difficult first set 21-18 and then annihilated their opponents in the second set 21-7. UT-Martin forfeited the final match to give the Eagles the sweep.

 

The Eagles next beach volleyball match will be on April 8 against Lincoln Memorial. The match will be played at 12 p.m. on the Carson-Newman beach volleyball courts.
