JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman beach volleyball team fell 4-1 to Lincoln Memorial on Saturday afternoon.
"First of all we are going to need more practices," Carson-Newman beach volleyball coach Kyle Peck said. "We were only able to get in one practice this week due to weather and that really showed in our ball control."
The No.5 and No. 6 matches started off the afternoon for Carson-Newman (2-3) and Lincoln Memorial (5-9). The tandem of Abbie McFarlane (McKinney, Texas) and Elena Vasquez (Riverside, Calif.) played a hard fought match against Tone Gill and Peyton McDaniel. The pairing of McFarlane and Vasquez dropped the first set 21-16 and stayed competitive in the second set falling 21-13.
At the No. 5 match Hannah Robertson (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) and Natalie Harris (Monroe, N.C.) squared off against Erica Whiteaker and Beka Wachob. The Eagles were down early in the first set, but came back strong falling 21-13. Once again the tandem of Robertson and Harris found themselves down early 19-11 in the second set, but the duo surged late, falling just short 21-19.
At the No. 3 pairing Allie Foster (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Morgan Ballard found themselves down 17-7 in the first, but pulled back to within six points at 18-12. The Eagles were unable to keep the momentum going as they dropped the first set 21-13. In the second set the duo found themselves in a back-and-forth contest, but the pairing was unable to hold serve and watched the Railsplitters pull away to a 21-12 second set victory.
The tandem of Alex Biro (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and Kendall Cooley (Castle Rock, Colo.) lost a very close match at the No.4 position. The duo was constantly in a back-and-forth contest with Lincoln Memorial falling 21-13 in the first set. The second set was a serve-for-serve contest as the Eagles pairing fell 22-20 in the second set.
The match finished with No.1 and No.2 teams. The No.2 pairing of Eileen Anderson (Pittstown, N.J.) and Marnie Streeter (Goldvein, Va.) saw a two match winning streak come to a close on Saturday afternoon. The duo fell 21-10 in the first set and 21-6 in the second set.
The No.1 team of Taylor Lowe (Franklin, Tenn.) and Morgan Harlan (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) won the first set of the afternoon for the Eagles with a 21-16 victory against Samantha Cash and Danielle Ged. The duo dropped the second set 21-14. In the third and final set Lowe and Harlan edged out their competition 17-15 to give the Eagles their only win of the afternoon.
"Not much phases them (Lowe and Harlan), they are seasoned beach players and that was an experience win.
The Eagles next match will be at home on April 18 against Lincoln Memorial, first serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
