CONWAY, S.C. - After knocking off their first Division I opponent in two years, the Eagles look to keep the streak going against a formidable Coastal Carolina squad.

"Coastal Carolina will be some of the strongest competition we face," says head coach Cat Lind. "We have been training hard mentally and physically for this weekend and I am looking forward to seeing how the team responds to this level of competition."

Carson-Newman (3-1) earned a split over the Chattanooga Mocs on Tuesday, Mar. 24. After falling in match one 5-0, the Eagles started match two with Lauren Williams and Alanis Mendez earning their second win of the season with a decisive two-set sweep of the Mocs, winning 21-13 and 21-18. It was the pairs first match that did not go three sets so far this season.

Sierra Still and Abby Struewing showed off their dominance at the no. two position with a resounding two-set sweep, knocking off their opponents 21-15 and 21-13. 

With a 2-1 lead, Toribio and Geurin clinched the match with a three-set victory, winning the first set 21-18, dropping the second set 21-12 and clinching the match with a 15-11 win in the final set. 

The win was the Eagles first true road win since Mar. 6, 2020 when Carson-Newman knocked off LaGrange College in Georgia 5-0.

The pairings of Still and Struewing and of Toribio and Geurin enter the weekend with a 3-1 record, the best on the team. Alyssa Johnson and Piper Halcrow are also 3-1, but all of their wins have come in exhibition matches. 

Coastal Carolina (12-4) enters the weekend after a doubleheader sweep of Erskine College on Friday, Mar. 26. The only losses by the Chanticleers this season are to ranked teams, including two losses to #15 South Carolina. The Chanticleers have recieved votes in every single AVCA poll this season. 

The Chanticleers lead the series against Carson-Newman 2-0, the last meeting a 5-0 win on March 24, 2019 in Wilmington, NC. The two schools were scheduled to meet at the Coastal Carolina Invitational last season before the COVID-19 pandemic ended the season.

Carson-Newman is currently 1-8 all-time against schools from the Palmetto State. The Eagles earned their first win over the Sandlappers earlier this season after knocking off Erskine 3-2. 

The Eagles will head back to Mossy Creek for their final home match of the season on Wednesday, Mar. 31 against St. Andrews. The team will honor their five seniors before the first match, which begins at 11:00 AM.
